Founded in 1966 by Dr. Albin O. Kuhn, UMBC is one of the fastest growing universities in the country. UMBC has a total undergraduate enrollment of 11,142 and its 500 acres are set in the suburbs of Baltimore only fifteen minutes away from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, thirty minutes away from Downtown Washington DC, and ten minutes away from the Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Originally a commuter school, UMBC has turned into a highly completive residential research university. Recently UMBC has been ranked in several categories by US News as the #1 Up and Coming School to watch and #6 in Undergraduate teaching and #5 as Most Innovative school.
Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, President of UMBC, has stated a commitment to the community to make us one of the top institutions in the nation. This commitment to excellence is unmistakable as we are celebrating our 50th anniversary. We continue to define education and create a community that is built upon diversity and inclusion.
UMBC has grown over the past 50 years as we continue to define excellence. We have 8 residential communities, various academic buildings, and multiple student life facilities. We are currently building a state of the art events center expected to be complete in late 2017 as well as about to break ground on new Interdisciplinary studies building this Spring.
